Federal Firearm Rights Restoration (FFRR) | Part 1
Did you lose your federal gun rights due to a criminal conviction? After more than three decades, you may finally have an opportunity to get them back—and two critical dates are coming up.
Welcome back to Military Justice Matters. I’m Justin Bennett, a 12-year Navy JAG Veteran and now partner with Parlatore Law Group.
This year, the Department of Justice is reopening a Federal Firearm Rights Restoration (FFRR) process under 18 U.S. Code 925(c).
The first public application window opens very soon—on November 4, 2026, for the first 5,000 applicants. The next window will open on January 4, 2027, for another 500 applicants.
So if you lost your rights because of a qualifying criminal conviction or a Dishonorable Discharge from the military, this could be an opportunity for you.
But understand that this process isn’t automatic. You’ll need to show that restoring your rights would be consistent with public safety and in the public interest. So what have you done since your conviction? What does your record show? Who can speak to your character today? That kind of evidence matters.
And understand what this process does: it only addresses federal firearm restrictions. It won’t erase your conviction, upgrade your military discharge, or resolve any state restrictions you’re under.
So if you’re in this boat and want to get your federal gun rights back, we’d love to talk with you to see if you might be a strong candidate to apply for this program.
As always—know your rights. Protect your legacy. Contact us today.
